The wingnuts may hoot and gibber, but a CBS News poll shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans approved of Obama’s speech: Poll: High Marks for Obama’s State of the Union Speech.

Correction: although it’s been linked all over the blogosphere today, the poll in this post was actually from last year. Apologies for missing that; I’ll update if new poll results become available.

Of course, you already know what an article like this will provoke from the right wing idiot blogs (which are usually written at a second-grade level): raving and jeering. For example:

All of the military technical manuals are written I believe at a sixth grade reading level. That's how you keep a sophisticated $40 million dollar fighter operational, or a $5 billion dollar aircraft carrier functioning at sea.

So what if it reads at 8th grade level.

Anyone that has ever taken a technical writing course knows: Never write a paper above a 8th grade level for a general, non-specific audience. It's the best way to get you point across to the most people regardless of their comprehension.

Did anyone expect anything less of the GOPTeaBags? I myself figured it was a foregone conclusion that they would find nothing but fault with it, and they lived up to my expectation by trying every lie they can to discredit it totally, which they have done.

The fact is, they have no real facts to back up their claims, and nothing at all of real substance, as it anything positive to counter with to offer in response, so all they have left is their lies. But, they seem to lose the fact that the majority of the real American people, those who still live in the 21st century and wish to continue there, not revert back to the GOPTeaBags ideal world of 100 years ago where there was no regulations or counter balance, the days of the Robber Barons and ultra rich, do understand where the President is coming from and approve.

They will find out in Nov with one of the biggest losses of other party's lifetime if they continue on the course they are on now. And thus, far, I see no desire on their part to change course. So they will pay the price and then blame the American people. Again.

Righteous Romney, Batty Bachmann, Hermy Germy Cain, Sleazy Snaketorum, Mindless Perry, and Nutty Newt.

Who else is there to vote for other than Obama and Ron Paul. At least RP is Pro-ameircan and wants to bring back the jobs that left our country and put millions of people out of work over the past decades.

Anyone that has ever taken a technical writing course knows: Never write a paper above a 8th grade level for a general, non-specific audience. It's the best way to get you point across to the most people regardless of their comprehension.

Not only that, the Flesch-Kincaid test is actually a pretty poor register for quality writing. It tries to boil down language to math, but determining the quality of language isn't that easy. Language is nuanced and varied, and relies on things like cadence, word choice, and appropriate pauses. These are things that take an experienced linguist to understand, not a computer. The FK test presumes that big words and long sentences make you smart.

So for example:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

The first line of the incredibly well-crafted Gettysburg Address. It receives a 15.38 on the FK scale. But if you cut out all the one-syllable words, rendering it completely incomprehensible and meaningless:

Fathers continent conceived liberty dedicated proposition created equal.

That gets a 21.46.

According to the FK test, rambling nonsense > Gettysburg Address.

91% of Americans Approve

Wow, can you can get more dishonest than this?

First of all, not all Americans watched the speech.

Second:

Americans who watched the speech were generally more Democratic than the nation as a whole...a president's supporters are more likely than his opponents to watch State of the Union addresses.

So it's 91% of the largely Democratic audience.

And then of course, we now know that it's not even this year's poll. Let's keep that in mind when we go to Little Green Footballs for news.

last year's information is updated for this year

According to the poll, which was conducted online by Knowledge Networks immediately after the president's address, 91 percent of those who watched the speech approved of the proposals Mr. Obama put forth during his remarks. Only nine percent disapproved.

. . .

Last year, 83 percent of viewers approved of Mr. Obama's State of the Union remarks.

Nothing will get done if Obama wins. The repukians are dead set on not passing or letting Obama help the people, and then these repukians want and expect the people to vote for them.

If Obama wins a second term, the people will suffer, and if a Republican wins, the people will suffer.

We might as well just keep Obama in office and vote out all the repukians from office, and then get rid of congress.

The debt ceiling has absolutely nothing to do with spending. It has to do with the paying the bills we already have.

This is the problem. Far too many people do not know the difference between the debt and the deficit.

I for one was glad to hear that the President is taking action himself on the more important issues since all the GOPTeaBags are doing is nothing and according to their mouth pieces, what they will doing for the rest of the year. There is much he can do within his executive powers, and he will use them as much as possible to do what needs to be done to help bring some relief to the American people and the economy. All the GOPTeaBags want to do is make the life of the American people even more miserable in order to try to make the President look bad, but, all they are doing is turning the majority of the real American people against them. The only ones who support them at this point are the very base, radical, extremist and bigoted supporters who are even morally worse than the GOPTeaBag candidates and their party cohorts in Congress, and of course, the Koch Brothers and their corporate mafia masters.

91% was the approval rating for last year's SOTU speech. No one ever said Obama had a 91% approval rating at any point since he's been elected--nor has any other POTUS had that high an approval rating. However, Obama's current 48% job approval rating looks pretty damn good next to the current 13% job approval rating for Congress.

"Of course, you already know what an article like this will provoke from the right wing idiot blogs (which are usually written at a second-grade level):"

Wow, really? I may not consider myself a right wing nut although I am a bit right of middle when it comes to fiscal policies and somewhat left of middle when it comes to social policies, and while I know that no party adheres to such similarities as my own political views, I do consider myself a conservative republican and I must say that your single quote there pretty much told me that I don't need to read anymore of what you have to say (unless you respond to me and then courtesy says I should respond back). After all, one, if you can't make a point without insults then it tells me two things. Those are that you are attempting to divert attention from the substance and also that you lack in your ability to bring substance to your point. Second, I often find that those who wish to insult the intelligence of others often attempt to do so in order to draw attention away from their own cognitive ability. No offense intended (although you did open the door), your correction tells me pretty much what I need to know about your own political agenda and level of extremism although I do give you props for at least admitting your mistake. However, that said, I must question your math and/or social skills because any claim of ninety-one percent approval and your belief in it shows either a lack of understanding of statistics or an idealism that borders on fantasy. Lastly, please don't paint people with such a wide brush. Oh, I know you'll come back and say that you didn't mean that all on the right are idiots or have second grade educations but that's what you implied. I'm on the right and I'll put my two Masters in the sciences up against anyone else's any day.

With 2 Masters of Science degrees aren't you wasting your education here on the Vine criticizing others debating skills when they disagree with you? Seems rather petty for such a high intellect.

I can tell you what sententious means, but I'd rather point out that the quote HereAndGone seems to attribute to the seeder was block quoted because it came from the author of this article, who provided this example to support his argument:

Weasel Zippers - Master Orator Barack Obama’s State Of The Union Speech Registers At An 8th Grade Reading Level…

But … but … but … he’s the smartest president evah!

91% is pretty damn high. I think one might say Obama is on the right tract here. The Repubs are going in the wrong direction and unless they can turn it around, they are toast. When it gets right down to what matters, it really is the economy, stupid and the public, even those who are bigots, want real change, real job security and a future to look forward to that is positive.

I don't think anyone supporting the President should rest on such numbers. Though 91% agree, today's Gallup Poll gives him only a 45% approval rating. This tells me that republican obstruction works to some degree with a segment of the voting public - the President gets blamed for republican blocking of policies that the public actually wants.

The latest State of the Union polls give Obama a 48% approval, 46% disapproval rating average--though the success of GOP obstructionism can be measured by the concurrent Congressional 13% approval, 80% disapproval rating average.

    Favorable=53% Unfavorable=43% Unsure=4% (Margin of error ± 3.5)

I know favorability isn't as reliable as job approval, but the trend has been positive in most polling groups

Thanks...though that poll is from the period ending the day before the SOTU speech. Here are today's more significant polls indicating the Florida electorate's preference for President Obama over the individual GOP candidates.

    Stop The Hypocrisy

The President should have remembered the limited comprehension of his Republican listeners and rendered the speech as a puppet show. Bad President, bad President.

Oftentimes i turn to fox News in response to get a good morning laugh on what they broadcast. All their gobbledygook chaos maybe just entertainment to stimulate comedy. these illusionist at that network couldn't possibly believe what they are reporting live, or can it be possible that the cast do believe it themselves on what they broadcast morning;noon; and night.

    A note on Flesch-Kincaid:

it's determined by number of syllables per word and number of words per sentence.

short sentences and small words are easy to understand.

they are very very difficult to construct, however, especially when discussing complicated concepts.

Giving a presidential speech at an 8th grade level is akin to fixing your car with only a screwdriver, a hammer, and a pair of pliers.

Doing a good job of it? that's pretty dang impressive.

Sixty-eight percent of speech-watchers questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey said they had a very positive reaction, with 24 percent indicating that they had a somewhat positive response and 8 percent saying they had a negative reaction

Spose you could say 92% approval ?

following is a tad off topic, but. Concerning my feelings for our president, and senate and congress, BOTH parties. Concerning cutting this that and the other thing. Sure wish we had leaders that lead by example. As part business owner of 3 businesses, I know that BEFORE I'd ask for cuts from my employees, I would first take cuts to my pay and benefits.

Kinda hypocrital to tell the people that pay your wages and benefits, that THEY have to cut, but not yourself (sorry, rant over)

I've never seen such a bi-partisian thread in all my time here. EV1 sick of 'the hill'.
