The Virginia House was scheduled to vote today on the unbelievably insane Republican bill that would make it compulsory for women seeking abortions to first be penetrated by a vaginal ultrasound probe, but after this demonstration developed they decided to postpone the vote: Silent Protest Outside, Virginia House Puts Off Ultrasound Vote.

Good for you, Ladies. It's about time women everywhere in America begin to take a stand on this awful assault on their rights and person by insensitive and callous men.

Great news! It's about time the women in America started to stand up and let their voices and protest be heard. If Issa won't let women be equally heard in the the People's halls of our government, then we will take to the streets!
Women of America...let them hear us roar!
Solidarity!

A harmless attempt to impart information to a woman to help with her decision on abortion would be a counselor or literature not to take control of her body away from her. That is what rapist do.
A woman already knows she is pregnant, so why would she need a vaginal exam like the one she had to find out she was pregnant? This is just burning women at the stake for thinking for themselves and not letting the seed of a man grow inside her.
I am a little upset that the National Organization of Women (NOW) is not in the forefront of this issue. Perhaps I am not aware of their involvement. After all, this was what the women's movement was all about, giving control of a woman's life, reproduction, choices, finances... to women. This undoes a woman's control. I think the father's of these children should undergo similar requirements if they did not use birth control. It takes two to create a child.
Woman Power!!!

I LOVED this article!
I'm actually relieved to see women standing up to this...finally. I also loved their idea of standing silently on the road and staring at their Representatives. This makes a very powerful statement.
If and when you have a minute, please check out the most recent article on my page. I wrote it two days ago...It's titled:
The GOP's Headless Woman
I'm tired of the "compassionate conservatives" trying to make laws that assume women don't have a head...I'm so tired of seeing women's rights stripmined by the GOP in States all over the Country. I'm not usually a one issue voter...but I WILL BE this year and for many years to come.

Thanks for reading it.
Oh I just SO can't wait to get back to the good ol' USA this summer (stationed overseas for three years now)...and get involved with women's rights directly.
I've been feeling frustratingly too far away for a while now.

A woman already knows she is pregnant, so why would she need a vaginal exam like the one she had to find out she was pregnant?
Well, according to two female posters on this site whom I won't name, one would say it's because she needs to make a "fully informed decision", and the other would say that's how they will know she's pregnant.
I've had an abortion, as have a number of females I've known throughout the years. I and they knew exactly what they were doing, and all that was required was a pregnancy test.
Amazing the hoops some people will jump through in order to justify their draconian views on women's rights to a legal medical procedure...

Exactly, Silvaria. From the link @3.1:
The growing momentum among state legislators to enact ultrasound “requirements” for abortion is an interesting tactic. Currently 20 states regulate the provision of ultrasound by abortion providers. The point appears to be twofold:
- raise the cost of the procedure to reduce the number of women who can afford an abortion
- require/offer/describe a view of the fetus to dissuade/shame pregnant women into not having the procedure

“This bill is physically invasive for women as well as an intrusion into the doctor-patient relationship,” said Tarina Keene, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. “This is the epitome of government invasion into a woman’s right to privacy. Let’s be clear, politicians have just voted to mandate that a woman undergo a transvaginal ultrasound despite her wishes.”

Victory, indeed! The bill has been amended to preclude forced vaginal probes:
The qualified medical professional performing fetal ultrasound imaging pursuant to subsection B shall determine whether a fetal ultrasound image can be obtained without the use of a transvaginal ultrasound or other ultrasound method requiring vaginal penetration. The qualified medical professional performing fetal ultrasound imaging pursuant to subsection B shall not perform an ultrasound requiring vaginal penetration without the prior written consent of the pregnant woman. If the qualified medical professional performing the fetal ultrasound imaging pursuant to subsection B determines that a fetal ultrasound image can only be obtained with an ultrasound requiring vaginal penetration and the pregnant woman declines to provide written consent to an ultrasound requiring vaginal penetration, then the provisions of this section related to performance of fetal ultrasound imaging shall not apply and fetal ultrasound imaging for the purpose of determining fetal age shall not be required.

Unfortunately, our legislators dismissed the protesting women as "out of touch" with the mainstream, stating that all the real women in Virginia were working. And these blowhards are busy working on new legislation to make it quicker to obtain a gun which can be used for illegal purposes, even as they have worked on legisltion to make it harder to obtain a legal abortion. We are so screwed up in Virginia and won't see it come around until the next State elections... even then, there's been some serious gerrymandering of House districts.

Well, ladies of Virginia, you now know your task. Just like the people of Wisconsin. When the people you voted in pass legislation you don't approve of, then go back to the voting booths and vote them out. Let the next set repeal the new laws.

The amendment is great news and basically renders the legislation toothless... it's all about "choice"..
These oppressive, regressive laws need to be smacked down every time they come to the table. Women are no longer going to be passive when our rights are challenged. I hated it when republicans won so decisively in 2010, but it looks like it was the best thing that could have happened to this country... we were all asleep at the wheel up until then.

So many of our freedoms are under attack and they are using massive amounts of money to bury the American people which includes American Women. This is not the old republican party my father and step father believed in. I have been watching the impact this has on a lot of life long republicans. It is sad to watch. We are in a battle for our basic rights. How did the far right religious group take over an entire party? We have so many people in office that should not be there. I can even think of 8 democrats that need to be replaced.
We all need to vote in 2012.

The age old religious war on women continues.

Well that is appropriate as a protest because the GOP is trying to silence women by taking away women's rights. The GOP doesn't want women voting for Democrats so attacking voting rights, women's rights, and unions is the GOP strategy for winning elections since the GOP has no real solutions for the future.

The silent demonstration was over bills that would define embryos as humans and criminalize their destruction, require “transvaginal” ultrasounds of women seeking abortions, and cut state aid to poor women seeking abortions.
Molly Vick of Richmond said it was her first time to take part in a protest, but the issue was too infuriating and compelling. On her lavender shirt, she wore a sticker that said “Say No to State-Mandated Rape.” Just beneath the beltline of her blue jeans was a strip of yellow tape that read “Private Property: Keep Out.”
One organizer said the event took root, was organized and publicized almost wholly through Facebook and other social media after last week’s votes on landmark anti-abortion bills racing through a legislature dominated for the first time by conservative Republicans.
“We could feel that there was a lot of outrage and emotion and people talking about these issues,” said Sarah Okolita, a Virginia Commonwealth University graduate student who helped arrange the Monday morning event.

This is VIRGINIA! For God's sake have they forgotten their history? This is Thomas Jefferson's state, the one he made sure to set up religious liberty for...which also included being FREE of religion! These are exactly the people that Jefferson worried about in his day, he feared that the religious and corporations would destroy the new government, and now it looks like they are hell bent on doing it.
Good for the women and the men who showed up to support them. And have a care, Republicans, we women have LONG memories, and we will not forget this.

This could put the ultrasound technician in a questionable position also, because coerced vaginal penetration can be see as a sexual assault on their part also.

Good point! This really differs little from third world tribal practices of raping women as a means of keeping them subservient to men.

The bill, which could pass the Republican-led House of Delegates as early as Tuesday, is one of the stronger ultrasound laws passed by states in recent years. If it is adopted, Virginia will become the eighth state to require ultrasounds before abortions, a rule that anti-abortion forces hope will cause some women to change their minds but that women’s advocates call an effort to shame women and interfere with their privacy. The Senate, which is split evenly along party lines, narrowly adopted the bill this month.
Mr. McDonnell, a Republican who sponsored similar legislation when he was a lawmaker, initially voiced strong support. But the bill has drawn intense public attention, and a spokesman struck a more muted tone over the weekend, a shift that opponents said could mean that the governor might amend it before signing it. A throng of the bill’s opponents held a vigil outside the Statehouse on Monday in protest.
“If the bill passes, he will review it, in its final form, at that time,” said the spokesman, Martin Tucker. In Virginia, a governor can amend a bill after final passage by the legislature.

Critics say the bill would require women, who already receive an ultrasound when they seek an abortion, to go through what would most likely be a second, medically unnecessary procedure. They also say it mirrors a nationwide effort to legislate away Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that guaranteed a woman’s right to have an abortion.

My understanding is that, as a medically unnecessary procedure, it would NOT be covered by Obamacare, which is part of the reason the religious right is forcing women to undergo this procedure. It will make the cost of obtaining a first trimester abortion prohibitive for many women.

I support life and am shocked at all of the pro death supporters and the twisted lies being spread about this bill.
I'm shocked at the illogical contortions anti-abortionists go through to make abortion more difficult and dangerous for women to obtain. If you want to make abortion illegal, then propose legislation or a constitutional amendment that does just that.
This tactic of punishing women for seeking a legal procedure is hypocritical and contrary to the spirit of the law. It's similar to—if murder were legal—requiring murderers to pay a $10,000,000 tax rather than outlawing it. Would you support that kind of idiocy as well?
- 11 votes
Texasguy, we all support life, quality of life. You seem to think you are the only one, you have placed yourself on a pedestal. Texas passed this crazy law, maybe you can buy tickets for public viewing. Women can think this through for themselves, they do not need you, Rick Perry or Virginia telling them that they must have an invasive procedure.
- 8 votes
We have all heard them scream about getting government out of their life. They are so two-faced it is laughable. I do refuse to let our government control our female organs and our bodies. Those that claim they care for "life" are just spouting rhetoric. They do not care about the child after it is born. They do not care women at all.
So many young, and I mean young girls need birth control if they has a disorder where they develop cysts. I wish birth control was available when I went through that nightmare. They put me on birth control when I was 18 but it was to late for save my ovary and uterus's. On my 21 st birthday, I was in the hospital having major surgery to remove all my female organs. They were 4 times the size they should of been from scar tissue and beyond saving. In those days, I had to be married and my husband had to sign all my hospital forms or they would not do that surgery.
I remember the days before birth control. I also remember what it was like for women that needed/wanted an abortion. That is a personal decision which is painful enough. In those day, to many women died because someone unskilled preformed the procedure.
Anyone supporting this forced agenda, has some wonderful image of days gone by. I have no desire to witness that inhuman behavior again. I think most women would rather die than go through life where every aspect of our life is controlled by some man, institution or government.

genevieveva--
I'm so sorry for what you went through. Having had my own fair share of girl issues (only one ovary left and the factory is quite shut down these days)...I can imagine what that must have been like.
When an aunt of mine was first married, they got pregnant quickly and had their first child before they were ready financially. Since this was the late 1960's, birth control pills were very new and only prescribed through the "family doctor."
My aunt went to our family doctor, on the advice of her mother and asked for the pill. The DOCTOR objected by saying, "Isn't your family catholic?"
He told her to go home and "think about it"..and if she still wanted to get on the pill, she could come back in 3 months.
She had no choice but to do that. Two months later she was coloring her mother's hair (my grandmother) one afternoon when my grandmother asked her if she was taking that pill yet. My aunt answered that no, she wasn't.
When my grandmother asked, "WHY NOT!? You know that you can't afford another baby yet!"
My aunt answered, "I'm pregnant."
That's how she got the second of four children and then she and her husband struggled to make ends meet for the next 20 years...all because the "family doctor" decided he would make that decision FOR her...based on religion.
That was 1969.
THIS is 2012...and I refuse to allow American women to go back there without a fight.

Gave me the best laugh I have had all day. I lost so many youthful years to that condition. When I was 17, I looked pregnant all the time and I was on a sodium free diet that severe heart patients had to follow. Nothing helped. To this day, Doctors look at me like I am crazy when I tell them it was the best surgery I ever had. My doctor came into the room to talk to me after the surgery. He sit down and actually apologized to me. He said he had done surgery on 80 yr old women that looked better than I did.
I remember to many unwanted (unexpected) pregnancies and the impact it had on the family and community. I remember the huge foster homes filled with unwanted children. I remember the impact this had on those poor children that lived there. I lost a good friend because she got pregnant at 54. She was like a second mother to me and a lot older but such a good soul. She lived two years after she gave birth but her heart was so damaged from having so many children. We forget that prior to birth control, more women died from child birth related issues than all the men killed in our wars.
The thought of returning to those ugly days.... we can not let that happen ladies.

So true there was a time when as often as we currently here of violent crimes in the news, we heard of women dying from botched abortions. PBS some years back aired a program on the children of the streets in New York City in the early 1900's. They had been abandon by their parents, especially single mothers due to limited contraceptions and lack of legal abortions.

Maybe with more honesty, those who enable extremists by turning a blind eye to their true motives will wake up and see what they're helping to bring to power here: a Christian Taliban.
